<image:caption>Clever use of a sliding door and a bespoke unit (just a little shallower than off-the-shelf) allows this small bathroom room for two basins, a loo, and a big bath/shower. This had seemed an impossible dream at the start, it was very satisfying to find the solution.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The ledge not only boxes the pipework for the lovely central controls, but provides a tidy space for bottles and soaps. Best of all, it means that when standing up, the space above knee level is 15cm wider than the bath, so when showering it feels spacious, not cramped.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We put this secret door is in the entrance hall of a Victorian house to avoid having a hall with 3 doors in. It looks like a bookcase when closed, but pushes through into a little utility space and downstairs loo beyond. One of the best things about a secret door is that people bother to close it...so instead of a door constantly open onto the loo, you usually only see the bookcase!</image:caption>

<image:caption>A clean simple bathroom for two small boys - LVT flooring and a wall hung sink make it super easy to wash the floor (enough said), and there is space for them both to brush their teeth side by side without jostling for space*. A wall mounted mixer tap gives more space on the back of the sink, looks clean and modern, and means no scum around the base of a tap! *famous last words - 12 months later they had a fight in here and one of them needed head glue. At least the floor was easy to clean!</image:caption>

<image:title>Pricing - Straightforward and good value.</image:title>
<image:caption>An initial discussion (by phone or in person) is without charge. Depending on what makes sense, I charge either an hourly rate, a project fee, or a mix of both. Occasionally I work on retainer. Some clients just need an hour or two of design/planning consultancy or styling help. Often I’m paid by the hour until we’ve agreed the scope of work, and then we agree a fee for the implementation of the project. I’m very happy to be involved in just one stage of a project. For some clients this is the initial stage of designing what they want, planning the detail, and appointing a builder they feel is a good fit. Others enjoy the process of design and planning, but do not have the desire to manage the on site day to day implementation side of things. I am not VAT registered, and many of the tradespeople I use are not either. I can frequently obtain trade discounts on bathrooms, kitchens, lighting, interior furnishings and flooring, and in these instances savings are passed directly on to the client.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hidden doors & false windows - Secret doors…..all my life I wanted a house with a hidden door. They aren’t just a lot of fun, but they are also a fantastic way to disguise a door and make a room or hallway more elegant or interesting. Now I live in a house with three. All our hidden doors are entirely bespoke, made by hand in Cambridgeshire. They can open inwards or outwards, include full depth shelves or ‘faux’ shelves with cut spines. They can be lockable, have integrated lighting, and include hardback or paperback titles of your choice. if you have a windowless or very dark bathroom, a false window can be transformative. See below</image:title>

<image:caption>This old wooden door sits between the music room of the main house and the hall of a rented annexe on the other side. It isn't in use, but has to stay, in case the annexe is needed as a granny flat in the future. This was the view when you entered the room. It felt like a dark corridor, and this unused corner became the natural resting place for unloved piles of paperwork and clutter. My lovely client had huge enthusiasm for the secret door concept but her budget was too restricted for a bespoke faux-book-case.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hidden doors & false windows</image:title>
<image:caption>The solution. The door sized mirror was bought off-the-shelf online. The room was suddenly full of reflected light and seemed bigger. There was room to put a cabinet and a chair in the corner, and the view on entering the room was completely transformed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In fact my client loved it so much we did it on the other side too - suddenly the tenant's tiny hall had a useful full length mirror and felt much more private without a 'spare' door looming in the wall. Secret door, anyone?</image:caption>

<image:title>Small kitchen - 18 years on! - I put this kitchen in in 2002…and photographed it 18 years later.</image:title>
<image:caption>I took this photograph in 2020, when I got the chance to revisit this London kitchen 18 years after I installed it. It was a small, inexpensive but carefully chosen kitchen designed to take wear and tear by the 5 young adults renting the house. We used tough worktops, doubled up the wall cabinets to allow plenty of storage space (and avoid dusty cluttered top-of-cupboard spaces!), and used timeless flat fronted units that were easy to wipe down. White metro tiles were robust, easy to clean and a classic look. The house is still a rental, and although it is probably time for a new floor, the choices we made haven’t dated, haven’t fallen apart, and on the whole I felt that this kitchen had aged rather better than me in the last two decades!</image:caption>

<image:caption>TVs aren't pretty when they are off, but my clients really wanted one in their kitchen. We built this bookcase to go at the end of some banquette seating we made for them, and painted the background to the TV section dark to 'lose' it as much as possible. These days it is filled with plants, books and decorative objects and the TV really does disappear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This small new build open plan kitchen was just like all the other kitchens in the development. Clean, white, smart...and a bit dull. I'm a huge fan of washing machines in bathrooms. It's a) where you take your clothes off, so they can go straight in the machine, and b) means you don't hit the spin cycle in the kitchen just as you are having a meal or answering a call.</image:caption>
